Experience
English Landscape Design was established in 1986 shortly after Marla Gagnum arrived in East Hampton, NY from England where she was involved in landscape gardening for 15 years. She also managed gardens in Switzerland, Greece, Canada, and Norway. Upon arrival in the United States, she studied landscape design formally at the New York Botanical Gardens and launched English Landscape Design. Marla Gagnum is a member of APLD (Association of Professional Landscape Designers), and she is also on the Garden Committee for Longhouse Reserve, a world-renowned public garden and cultural center in East Hampton, NY. Additionally, she is on the Garden Event Committee for Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton as well as on the board of EECO Farm (East End Community Organic Farm) of East Hampton.
The Core Team
Jim Ceckowski, the foreman in charge of installation and maintenance, has been with English Landscape Design since 1987, and Chaki Bellamy, assistant foreman, has been on board since 1995. Victoria Shields Weslek, a talented landscape designer who is a graduate of The New York Botanical Gardens, has been with the company since 1998. Jennifer Miller, a long experienced landscape gardener, is in charge of perennials.
Project Scale
English Landscape Design enjoys doing large projects, from the entire landscape design and installation for a property with a newly built house to the complete renovation of an older property. We also delight in the small project, which might be a jewel of a decorative herb garden or a beautiful perennial bed.
Client Connection
We find it essential to get to know our clients and their life style. Do they enjoy gardening, or perhaps they prefer to spend their leisure time playing tennis. Do they have small children? Do they entertain? Initially, we spend time developing a dialogue with them in order to have a detailed picture of their desires so that we can offer creative and practical solutions. Once a concept is established, a master plan can be designed.
Organic Gardening
English Landscape Design is an organic landscape company. We recognize that it is very important that we do not use toxic chemicals and are sensitive to the need for improving the soil naturally. We are convinced that chemical pesticides and herbicides are harmful to our health and that of our children, as well as that of the wildlife about us. We use natural , non-toxic organic products, then guarding our environment.
